Elijah is a health geographer whose primary area of research focuses on the social and environmental production of health and well-being. He draws on social theory and employs mixed-method approaches in his research projects. His published research contributions include studies on collective action for environmental health promotion, environmental stress and psychosocial health, community-based participatory research, health systems resilience to climate change, disparities in urban health outcomes, and water insecurity and safe sanitation in Sub-Saharan Africa. He collaborates with researchers, policymakers, community groups, and development agencies on research projects in Canada, Kenya, Mexico, Ghana, and Burkina Faso.

Joseph is a health geographer by training, and his primary area of research focuses on the relationships between environment and well-being, broadly defined. He is specifically interested in how the places we live, work, and play impact population health and well-being, especially with regards to (re)emerging infectious and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). While most of his research is situated in a global context, his regional specialization is in sub-Saharan Africa, where he explores place-based perceptions and understandings of well-being as well as the links between contextual attributes of places and population well-being. His current research explores Black immigrants’ experiences in the United States and Canada. Specifically, he is interested in understanding how Black immigrants’ health and well-being are impacted by social, technological, and demographic changes. He employs social theories, participatory, and mixed-method approaches to answer various questions and works with marginalized communities to promote their health and well-being.
